What is a Dental Restoration?

A dental restoration is a way to restore a tooth damaged by decay or fracture back to its normal function and shape. Tooth decay can be caused by a combination of factors – oral bacteria, sugary food and drinks and poor dental hygiene. Over time, these factors can weaken enamel, break down the tooth and cause a cavity. Once a cavity has formed, the tooth will continue to decay.

Depending on the level of damage to the tooth, our dentists may recommend a dental restoration to restore the function and aesthetic of your natural tooth. The process usually involves removal of decay on the tooth and then replaced with biocompatible restorative materials.

Different methods and materials may be used. If the decay is beyond repairable by a filling, your dentist may suggest root canal therapy or tooth extraction.

Fillings: Composite Resin

Composites resin serve both functional and aesthetic roles. These tooth coloured materials can provide a strong and naturally aesthetic solutions. These materials are a preferred restoration nowadays by patients as they are ‘invisible’, blending into the patients’ teeth.

Indirect Restoration: Ceramic Restoration

A ceramic restoration is an indirect restoration requiring either the CEREC Technology or an impression is made  and sent off to a dental lab where a ceramic restoratio is made to the exact size and shape of the tooth cavity. A ceramic restoration also strengthens the tooth, as it is cemented into the tooth structure.

Tooth Filling Aftercare

Please be advised –by the time you leave Smile Point Dental, you may still experience some effects of the anaesthetic. We advise avoiding consuming any food or drink until the anaesthetic has worn off, which will help to avoid any injuries or other risks.
